About our Department
The Technology and Design department is primarily concerned with the Thought and Action of each pupil. Through a range of intellectual skills and knowledge, pupils can engage in Technology and Design activities that help develop a technological capability which we consider to be essential preparation for life in today’s society.
In Technology and Design all pupils will use and develop practical and thinking skills to solve problems. Pupils will be given the opportunity to experience the use of industrial machines to produce technological artefacts. Through the acquisition of new CAD machinery in the department, pupils will be able to experience and use Computer Aided Design / Computer Aided Manufacture and develop their ICT and communication skills.
Having gained a broad based knowledge at Key Stage 3, pupils have the chance to build on their existing knowledge at GCSE. The course is split up into two sections. Coursework accounts for 60% of their final grade. In it they get to design and manufacture a product of their own choice. The examination based on the theory element of the course is worth 40% of the total mark.
As a subject Technology and Design offers a basis for entry into many areas of industry, such as Design, Graphics, Engineering and ICT. However, all employers recognise and value the skills of problem solving as being essential in the ever changing workplace.
