Religious Education

reMrs L. Harey

In The High School Ballynahinch RE department, along with other agencies such as the home and the church, we are concerned with the spiritual and moral development of young people.  We believe that it is very important to have a clear vision for the subject and those young lives temporarily entrusted to our care.

RE should be a challenging study as religious beliefs and values have a cutting edge in relation to the basic attitudes and norms which society accepts as part of everyday life.  In this respect Cultural Heritage and Education for Mutual Understanding are important elements in the study of RE.

Religious ideas and values are important to our pupils.  They have to face moral issues in everyday life and by studying RE they can be encouraged to reflect on religious responses to these moral issues and to examine the values raised by religious teaching.  In our society this sharpening and refining of beliefs and values is in a Christian context and based on the Bible, though this need not be exclusively so.

RE plays an important role in helping prepare young people for a wide range of careers and helping them to grow into sympathetic, understanding adults through the study of important religious, moral and ethical issues and assisting them to become involved as responsible citizens in society.  Under guidance, our pupils are allowed to weigh up the various arguments involved in an issue with an open mind in order to reach reasonable conclusions.
